Handling the application process

It’s important to prepare well for the personal experience interview. There is a series of 4 to 5 questions (an example includes “tell us a time you experienced failure”) The personal experience interview is fairly straightforward and broad, but an applicant should prepare by sitting down prior and writing down paragraphs about these stories and discuss them stories with people he or she trusts. During the interview, the interviewers will interrupt with questions like “what role did you play?”.

I joined the firm as a summer intern as a Sophomore Diversity Intern at McKinsey for about 10 weeks, and after this, I received an offer to work there full time. Because I applied to McKinsey before I graduated from Harvard, I consider my circumstances to be quite unique.

I think an applicant's college transcript is important to display his or her academic success and rigor. Extracurricular activities creating a coherent story that shows you inside and outside of the classroom are great to showcase. Promotion discussions

Promotion to a manager position can be difficult, though, because compensation is not adjusted right away to the level of other managers. I’m unsure if the promotion process is fair enough, though as of now I’ve perceived it to be fair. But as you go down the line and up the levels, the process seems to become more unfair.

There also seems to be some disconnect between the feedback you get day-to-day and the review you get in the review room. The review in the review room seems to be more deflated.

The “up or out” McKinsey model, though unofficial, is true. The process of promotion at the beginning is pretty straight forward, fair, and depends on objective metrics.
