Handling the application process

August 19, 2020

Connect with someone in the group and get a sense of what the interview process is like. I didn't have many behavioral questions, which would have thrown me off had I not connected with someone before.

August 19, 2020

Be open to talking about yourself outside of work. A big part of it is culture fit.

Navigating the company culture

September 24, 2020

Be yourself, and be vulnerable. Obviously, do it within reason, but in order to immerse yourself in any culture, you have to be willing and open to share things about yourself.

September 24, 2020

Be honest, when things were going on with George Floyd, I told the team that I needed time off, and they were very receptive. Just be vocal and vulnerable.

August 19, 2020

Try to attend social events through the diversity groups or with your actual work group. That was a big thing because so much of my group travels, and not being in that campus bubble helped me get to know more people and build a network.

Shaping your career development

September 24, 2020

Be an active participant in your career development. I’ve realized that my Black peers who haven’t had as positive an experience just aren't as visible at the firm. My experience has been good because I’m very vocal and intentional about building and sustaining relationships with people.

Application and interview process

I interned two years before with PwC, and after I told them I didn't want to be in audit, they still offered me a position in audit. I kept in touch with KPMG recruiters, and when I told them I wasn’t going to PwC, they let me skip the campus interview, and flew me out for an interview with the partners. I interviewed with a partner and director, and then within two weeks, I’d received an offer.

Company culture

My start cohort was 45 people, and I was one of only 9 women, and I was the only Black woman. That has shaped my perspective, but I appreciate our company culture. It's very inclusive, and I have great mentors.

Company culture

This past Tuesday, we had a townhall with all of the Black professionals in the Chicago office, and we talked about what we wanted to see and what the firm needed to improve upon.

Diversity programs

I’m very involved. I participate in our overall diversity and inclusion efforts in Chicago. When they have events or are doing recruiting, they ask me if I want to participate. I’ve spoken to interns, and I’ve participated in a women in diversity event. I’m also part of the CAAN (Chicago African-American network) at the firm. Last year, I went to the diversity conference in Las Vegas. That was a 3 day series with workshops on being Black at the firm and things like that. It was really good for networking but it was also just a lot of fun.

Diversity programs

I feel like the company values me and tailors my development.

tenure:

Application and interview process

It was very quick. From the time I applied, they were trying to have interviews a week later. The turnaround was really quick, which was nice.

Application and interview process

The interview process consisted of one super day where I met with three people. Two of the interviews were very informal and didn’t get into behavioral questions. The last one was more behavioral questions and a few technical questions.

Promotion discussions

My manager talked to me about early promotions, but I don’t think the company really likes to promote people early. It’s doubtful that I’ll get one this year because of COVID.

Promotion discussions

I’m a year out from promotion time, but I feel prepared for the discussion when the time comes. We have performance management leaders who act as your advocate in the year-end review process. I think mine has been very open about identifying experiences to focus on in the upcoming year to prepare for the process. She also helps identify gaps in my experiences so I can address them early.

Promotion discussions

It’s been accessible to get into leadership for the business resource groups. They send email blasts that encourage people to get involved, which has been good because I’m doing more than just attending events.

I get along well and have been recognized for my hard work. They make it clear that questions are welcome and I have no qualms coming to them for any issues.

Company culture

While culture is highly dependent on your team, I’ve noticed high camaraderie between coworkers at KPMG. Eveyone is willing to help each other out and questions are welcome.

Company culture

Consulting and not having office space makes it harder to be seen and events are highly dependent on your availability and location. I hope moving forward, my team is better about getting us together for establishing relationships.
