Handling the application process

September 28, 2020

If you're interviewing as part of any entry level program, take ownership of where you want to be. Develop relationships with your team, but also outside of your team, and be sure to leverage that when the time comes.

Navigating the company culture

September 18, 2020

I think learning the norms and org structure is how you can familiarize yourself with the business. There’s nothing wrong with acclimating as long as you don’t assimilate. With assimilation, there’s always a piece of losing a piece of yourself. If you feel like you have to assimilate to a company in general, then that’s not the company for you. As long as you're respectful and kind, that’s all that should matter.

Shaping your career development

September 28, 2020

You have to take initiative and make sure that you’re documenting your progress, but as long as you’re doing that, you should be fine.

September 18, 2020

Take ownership over your career. Set up time to do check-ins with your manager so you have the space to talk about career development and future goals.

Send someone an email and ask them to get a coffee, and they'll be more than willing to do that.

Product Manager

Philadelphia, PA

tenure:

1-3 years

Company culture

It depends on the job, but for Product Management it isn’t stable - my hours are 7am - 7pm. But for most jobs it’s pretty relaxed.

Diversity programs

They take a lot of initiative to hire diverse talent. They have groups like Black Employee Network, LatinX, etc.

Relationships with manager(s)

They’ve all been great. They’re all super insightful and knowledgeable. A few of them came from AT&T or Motorola, so they bring a lot of experience from outside of the Comcast world to the company. They don’t micromanage you. They’ve been very transparent about managing me.

Relationships with manager(s)

All managers have been supportive of me both inside and outside the work environment. They give me the space to by myself and openly talk about things that are top of mind.

Relationships with manager(s)

The managers that are Black take leadership and mentor me. We have Diversity, Equity, and Inclusion groups that are functionally similar to ERGs, but they provide a platform for Black senior leaders to control the initiative.

Company culture

It’s very fast-paced. It’s very resourceful and social. It’s an environment where merit will get you far, but being good at your job and being likeable will get you really far.

Company culture

It’s a really fun company. There’s a lot more social activity going on. It’s also very lively, so everyone is friends past even being co-workers.

Diversity programs

They're pretty standard for a Fortune 50 business. We have employee resource groups for different minority groups. They are focused on race, abilities, and sexuality.

Diversity programs

There's a good level of autonomy for the ERGs. Being part of the Black ERG, a lot of the recent events are focused on the Black experience with all of the social justice movements going on.

Diversity programs

There’s only so much power that they’re going to give Black employees at a company like this. When I think of corporate america, it’s an oppressive system rooted in whiteness and assimilating to whiteness. A lot of companies create ERGs, but there is only so much they can do to truly redistribute power.

Finance Associate

Philadelphia, PA

tenure:

Less than 1 year

Company culture

It’s very buttoned up, but not in a stifling way. The dress is a lot more business professional/casual, whereas with NBCU it’s more casual or trendy. Comcast is just more traditional in that sense.

Company culture

It’s a healthy office culture. It’s not like Google or Facebook where it’s just fun fun fun, but in terms of being in a large corporation, it’s healthy. The atmosphere isn’t bro-ey. It’s efficient; people work really hard.

Company culture

They have a fantastic work-life balance. People are out by 5pm, but they get a lot of stuff done. They're very efficient in meetings.

Company culture

When people work at Comcast, they stick around because it's a really great place to work.

Diversity programs

I think ERGs are important, but you’re not around them everyday. The events tend to be something that you do if you have the time. Not that my teams haven’t done this, but if you have a team that pushes you to attend the events, they’ll be more effective. My teams have been very lean, so it’s been hard to make it to those events.
